When the war in Ukraine began, I saw friends have their lives overturned in an instant. Families were torn apart, homes destroyed, and loved ones forcibly displaced across Europe. Their stories and struggles made the conflict deeply personal, and I knew I wanted to take action. That’s how I became involved with D2SL, joining a volunteer-led aid convoy to deliver humanitarian support directly to Ukraine.

My Journey from the UK to Ukraine

My journey began in Sheffield, before I headed to Bournemouth to collect the vehicle (a VW T5 van) that would carry vital supplies. From there, I travelled to Dover, took the ferry to Calais, and collected donations of aid for Ukraine.

The first night was spent in Essen, Germany, before driving onwards to Warsaw, Poland, to deliver part of the humanitarian aid. The final stage took me to Lviv, Ukraine, where the supplies were needed most. Each stop along the way reminded me that this was more than just a long drive; it was a lifeline for people living through war.

Delivering Humanitarian Aid to Ukraine

The van was filled with medical supplies and food aid, destined for Ukrainians affected by the ongoing conflict. Handing over the items to those coordinating local distribution was both humbling and emotional. It was clear that every box, every package, would help someone in need, whether a family struggling with food shortages or hospitals in desperate need of medical equipment.

Challenges on the Road

Driving 20-year-old vehicles across Europe was far from easy. At one point, my hotel reservation was cancelled just 30 minutes before arrival, leaving me stranded and exhausted after hours on the road. Constant delays, rerouted journeys, and pushing through fatigue made it clear that survival on the trip depended on flexibility. By the end, I figured the whole experience was basically a crash course in character building.

Yet alongside these obstacles came moments I’ll never forget. Meeting other volunteers highlighted the incredible network of people committed to helping Ukraine. One of the most profound moments was meeting my Ukrainian friend for the first time in person and hearing his story. It was harrowing yet inspiring, and it gave the journey even deeper meaning.

Arriving in Lviv

Reaching Lviv and delivering the aid was an unforgettable experience. Watching complete strangers come together, united by one cause, was powerful and emotional. In that moment, I saw how solidarity and compassion can overcome distance and hardship.

Why Supporting Ukraine Matters

This humanitarian convoy to Ukraine showed me how rewarding it is to give time and energy to those in need. The war is ongoing, and the people of Ukraine still urgently need help. Every act of generosity, whether it involves donating, volunteering, or spreading awareness, makes a meaningful difference.

If you would like to help, please consider donating to D2SL so we can continue to support Ukraine. Together, we can stand with Ukraine and continue to bring hope where it’s needed most.

Love Hannah,
