Who are The Witches of Bucha?
Every night, when darkness falls over Bucha, a team of Ukrainian women quietly takes position in a nearby field.
They call themselves the ‘Bucha Witches’ — a mobile air defence unit made up almost entirely of civilian women who volunteer to defend Ukraine’s skies from Russian drones.
By day, they are teachers, vets, and manicurists. By night, they operate machine guns, trying to shoot down Russian drones.
Each mobile team defends a sector of the sky. If a drone slips past, they pass on the coordinates to the next group. The process is fast and tense: they have seconds to shoot.
With homes destroyed and neighbours killed during the Russian genocide in Bucha in 2022, many of these women joined the group, determined to resist Russia’s aggression — to protect their homes and families.
